I'm looking for some alternatives to the traditional oil based wood stains, laquers, and polyurethanes.

Something with maybe less of a smell, but that still works well.

I know minwax makes some water based polys and stains. I've used the polycrylic with decent results for stuff that doesn't get a lot of abuse. I've never tried the stain though. I believe the colors are kinda limited.

It would be nice to be able to finish things in the HO's house without stinking the place up.

What have you guys had good luck with?

My best advice is to find a local company that does just water borne finishes. Target Coatings is my choice. They are about an hour a 15 min from me, so I can run up there if need be.

Waterborne finishes have made leaps and bounds over the past few years and keep getting better. Polycrylic is a very old formulation. I don't bother with it. The only waterborne coating I use that isn't from Target is Rustoleum Ultimate Poly. Stuff is real good for an inexpensive but fairly durable finish. I use it on clear finished trim, railings, doors, etc.
