There's a few holes to patch here as well. Probably when flies hibernate in winter and the small birds peck in to get them. There are a few plastic snakes up there to try and scare them away.
Insulation is as you say pretty good.
Get your own little ecosystem going on if you're not careful. Dad used to set snares for the mice that would run the rafters. They didn't have plastic snakes back then, lol. Plastic St. Patrick drove em all out.
Good question. Luckily that's not a working flue. If it was the pot would need to be 6ft above the ridge. Having a working flue really bumps up the house insurance. Most of the thatches go up because of chimney problems. Chimneys and Thatch | Thatch Advice Centre
Should get another 10 years out of it with a new ridge. The type of thatch used for this roof is water reed, which has a longer life than some of the other types. The yellow colour of a new thatch doesn't last long.
Thatch lasts anywhere from 15- 60 years. It depends on various factors. The type of thatch is one. Water reed is the best, wheat straw and long straw not so good. A very damp climate shortens it's life as well.
Also depends how good the thatcher is. Pack it too loose and it leaks, too tight and it can't breathe and rots.
Ridges are always done with long straw as it bends over the top, so only last about 10 years. Getting the ridge done is really important with thatch
How often do you rethatch?
When is there too much up there and it needs a stripping?
How do you flash a chimney to thatch?
Just a few questions for now.
Thanks for humoring us dumb yanks. We never see thatch in Ohio. 😁

It can be over thatched if it's worn down a bit thin and it's not rotted. Sometimes the lot gets stripped.
Flashing around the chimney is done with a sand/cement fillet. Not sure if you can see it in the photo. Can't use lead like for slates or tiles and it won't dress down on the thatch.
Rafters and purlins. Has to be a steep pitch for thatch.
Rats can be a problem, like birds and squirrels. Grey ones that came over from the USA are worse than the native Reds.
Never heard of that virus, is it like Covid?
Used to be a cheap method of roofing years ago when people who worked the land used it, but nowadays it can be expensive.
I built an extension about 10 years ago and used Welsh slate for that.
Ridge is finished now. My wife asked for an American Bald Eagle on the roof and a Colorado Rattler. Never seen these animals so I need you guys to tell me if he has done this right before I pay him.
A bird born to run, the Greater Roadrunner can outrace a human, kill a rattlesnake, and thrive in the harsh landscapes of the Desert Southwest. Roadrunners reach two feet from sturdy bill to white tail tip, with a bushy blue-black crest and mottled plumage that blends well with dusty shrubs. As...
