New phone book arrived today

Looked in the 2010 yellow pages today for my ad. I'm still going with the small presence in the YP and a website combination. I noticed that there were fewer listings this year in the YP to compete with. I don't know if it's Michigan's economy driving us all out of business or contractors just giving up on the Yellow Pages in general.

Who gave up on the yellow pages this year and why?

I gave up on phone book advertising. In the 2008-2009 books for every advertising dollar I spent, I received 50 cents in contracts. I stayed a year longer than most and had premium placement. I'll consider getting back in the books if they drop the rate to 25% of what I paid. That might be difficult though as I heard phone book publishers are going bankrupt.

When things work, more people pay money for it. When things dont work, they simply wont and when its time to renew, they dont.

If it wasnt for contractors and attorneys, the print YP would have been gone for quite awhile now. Thats pretty much what makes up the books now.
Angus, you must be my clone. Thats the first thing I thought of too.

Anyway, I personally still look in the phone book first when looking for a local business. (I hope I'm right because I just upped the ante and am relying more on them in 2010)

When relying on an internet search, there are too many variables and "did you means".

I personally think there are still enough of us old duffers that still pick up the YP book first to look up something. But it's definitely changing, the computer generation is coming on strong.

That's why I still believe a combination of the two still have merit.

As a casual observer to a friend that lives part time in MI, coupled with the desperate calls for help which appear on this forum about bi-weekly, I am wondering what's going on there.

My friend comes back here to work because he says there's no work at all there (Port Hope area). Why is it that Michigan is having so much trouble? Any idea?

Just curious.

Everybody says the economy's bad ever since the housing market imploded. Michigan has had a bad economy for a decade. I have visited out of state and hear how bad it is and realize how (my relatives) don't have a clue.

The common answer is the automakers dysfunctional management and our complete reliance on them. Without a doubt it's a big part of the problem. I still don't know how GM could go bankrupt.

Our state government has completely let us down also. I stopped even paying attention but I'm pretty sure we still don't have a working budget as of last year. We have the biggest exodus of people per state population. Every day more police and fireman are being laid off. Thousands of businesses are closed, not small mom and pops, big thousand employee plus firms. And this is the good side of the state. Detroit I can only imagine, ask Frankawitz about it.

Hey what does this have to do with the yellow pages? :eek:fftopic:
Well that's my rant for the night.

Sorry, was off topic. My mistake. (But your "rant" explained alot. I forgot about the auto industry base in MI)

OK Back to the subject of Yellow Pages!

No, I was laughing at myself! I went off on a tangent. After partying through the 70's 80's and 90's my one brain cell left sometimes slips a gear. My fault.

No more YP for me. The internet has killed Print versions of the YP. Hardly anyone uses them anymore and yes, idearc and others have filed

Our YP were delivered last week as well and have already made their way to the recycle center. I had to laugh as I was throwing mine in since the dumpster specifically for YP was completely full. At first I thought it was the old ones everyone was tossing out but upon closer inspection the damn thing was full of the 2010 version.

Clearly it is not wise to advertise in this manner here. Thankfully I dropped mine several years ago.

Not to mention the HUGE amount of trees that are gone forever to make those amazing doorstops.
Dropped out also. Had some jobs from it but not enough to justify.
Are you really out???? That's thew question. I cancelled about 6-7 years ago. They claimed I had to pay if I wanted the number unlisted/not printed.
I refused. To this day, they still have me listed.
The number they listed is my shop number, so I just forwarded it to my home/office.
