A lot of plumbers don't like auto feed. the owner becomes complacent and stops draining the boiler and sediment gives a false reading on the probe or float. When that happens the auto feed floods.

They absolutely don't last forever, rust is an issue, water feeds, no automatic feed and go on winter vacation, clogged, cracked or rusted boiler section, cracked or used though rads causing damage

there is a reason any large building with a steam boiler has to have an operator watching it 24/7

I have helped my plumber replace many steam systems including my own

There are indeed no guarantees in life. I'm a fan of the auto feed though. Saves me from having to sit there and hold the the valve open.
I'm a total psychopath though and a good time to me is sitting in my basement on a weekend and drinking a beer while I do laundry and let down the boiler.
