The B.I.A. has maintained a rather rigid stance against the usage of used brick. They drafted a Tech.note #15 in May of 1988 explaining their stance with this topic. In that note they used poor bond strength as their core reasoning. Over the years, there has been much conjecture as to the real reason the B.I.A. highly discouraged the usage of such material.

In 2013 a college student ,Mary Soo Park published a paper that turns the tide on the possibly archaic B.I.A. Tech.note . For those interested, here is a connection to Ms.Park's paper.
