I am going to buy a laptop and want to set up a mobile office. My biggest question is how do you hook up to the internet without wi-fi hotspots? I live and work in BFE and have little or not access to wi-fi. I know you can purchase mobile cards or something like that but what kind of money am I looking at. I am with alltel mobile phone service if that helps.

I use an HP450wbt mobile printer. It runs on a battery, and has Bluetooth connectivity to the laptop. When I use to get online, I had a USB cord to my cell phone, and I basically dialed up my ISP like an average modem. It didn't take long to realize I was wasting a lot of air time dicking around on the web, when I really didnt need to be. If you are wanting just to surf around at night while at the campground, I'm pretty sure verizon and other companies offer wireless service, but pretty sure its fairly pricey.

Careful there. With technology in the wireless Internet industry changing so fast these days, and the promise of a wireless connection with speeds greater than cable, I'd be a bit slow to sign a one or two year agreement with a provider right now unless I just had to have it now.

Nathan made a post somewhere about it recently. See if you can find it or PM him before you commit to anything.

I just got my verizonwireless internet card up and running tonight. I tested the speed and found it clocks in at a miserable 120kbs on both the downlaod and upload tests; compared to my cable modem speed of 9054 kbs download and 352kbs upload. I suppose you pay a speed penalty for the luxury of mobility.
