Attention Service Repair Plumbers,

Not sure how many of you know this, but Moen has been phasing out their long-standing 2 handle cartridge (1224) and 1 handle kitchen & bath cartridge (1225).

Since 2009, Moen has been using the new 1255 cartridge in all single handle kitchen and lavatory faucets. (The 1225 is only used in Moen's Moentrol shower valve now.

Now, I just found out that the 1224 - used for over 50 years in their 2 handle kitchen and lavatory faucets - is going the way of the dodo too. They started using the new 1234 cartridge in 2014 and are officially rolling it out in their new production this year.

Both the 1234 and the 1255 are ceramic disk cartridges with stainless steel stems. The 1255 is sweet, because it makes it a helluva lot easier to repair the 1 handle kitchen faucets than the old 1225. Plus, they are supposed to last longer and definitely have a smoother handle feel.

I attached a couple of photos so you know what they look like. Hope this helps prevent any surprises if you happen to be on a call to fix a Moen leak and automatically assume that it is going to be one of the "timeless classic" Moen cartridges.

Best,

Justin B.

If it improves Moen quality, good.
It's certainly a quality improvement. I work on a lot of Moen products, as it is mostly what I install.

I've only gotten a few calls on the 1255 in the early going because the cartridge nut seemed to loosen up a bit and create a small leak on certain models. (That was on one particular retail model, and I try to stay away from retail. But that's going back a couple of years.) I'm assuming they made a design change, as I haven't had any issues since.

Like I said, smoother handle feel, supposed to be longer lasting with ceramic disk over plastic/brass, and a lot less handle adapter parts in the valve if repairs are needed.
