When you say "digital cable box" are you referring to what you get from the cable company or is this digital satellite?

Digital cable boxes only do ATSC or QAM and most times they will not receive a standard NTSC modulated signal over channel 3. So in order to do what you are proposing, you would need an ATSC modulator and a signal frequency trap that corresponds with the frequency of your modulator so that you don't interfere with whatever is normally on the channel that will receive the alternate signal source.

Also, you would have to find out if your cable box receives "standard" frequencies or if the channels are programmed to run on a set of alternate frequencies that are determined by the cable company.

So on your head end side you would hook up your trap in line with the cable line going into the house and then from that point forward, you can tie in your ATSC modulator using a splitter/combiner.
