I need a little help, I am not sure what the clearance around the firebox is required by code and more importantly why you guys reccommend...it is a wood burning one if that matters...

Thank you, everything checked out with my plan except I need to move the mantel shelf up 4 inches.

The Sketch up.... bookcases on both sides, mantel shelf connecting them. PVC pipe running through mantel shelf, into and down left bookcase to assist in ease of wire fishing for the TV that will sit on the shelf with the components in the left base cab. Shaded area is exsiting brick, the hearth is also brick but I didn't shade it, otherwise it would get more confusing to look at.

 The start up cost is next to nothing, but I seem to loose alot of time everytime I use it...

You got that right.
Here's one I did a few years ago if it helps your (somewhat similar) design any.

This one housed an electric fireplace insert, notice the convenient openings for the electronics . . .

Here in northern Michigan the inspectors always require the specs given by the manufacturer. That is what they go by. Therefore, it changes with every fireplace mantle and hearth I build.
thanks
