I was superintendent of this job, and here's some of the work we did.

I haven't worked for that builder in 4 years, but I got called back by the owner to do some small repair work, so I got to look it back over today. I forgot how cool it was.

I built the log stairs. Fun to figure and lay out, not fun scribing 18 log treads to fit on log stringers.

Very cool, what kind of wood has such a dark heartwood and light sapwood?

Cedar. I forget which type of cedar. Seems like the guy with the mill that I got logs from had what he called mountain cedar, western red cedar, and one or two other variations. I don't remember which this was. The most I can tell you at this point is that the treads are from a cedar tree of some type....

I built probably 12-15 curved sets of stairs like this, and generally I used pine logs. I think I only did two with the cedar.

Eastern Red Cedar has the red heartwood and white sapwood.
