loft re joisting

a loft company has said they will lie 6 by 2 joists in line with my original 4 by 1 and a half inch joists and screw the new joists into my old ones.....i cant understand how all the extra added weight of the new joists will make my old ones stronger...please help...... :(

Could you snap a 1x2 in half with your bare hands? Could you snap a 2x2? How about a 3x2? Get the idea?
