loft re joisting

a loft company has said they will lie 6 by 2 joists in line with my original 4 by 1 and a half inch joists and screw the new joists into my old ones.....i cant understand how all the extra added weight of the new joists will make my old ones stronger...please help...... :(

Could you snap a 1x2 in half with your bare hands? Could you snap a 2x2? How about a 3x2? Get the idea?
Actually the 2x6's sistered to the 2x4's will increase the live and dead load of the loft than with just 2x4 or 2x6's alone. I am guessing you already have some sag with just the 2x4's?
If the 2X6's can be secured to the structure at each end you will have a very dramatic improvement.
Just so you're aware, the 2 x 6's will actually be 1 1/2" x 5 1/2". Nevertheless, like the last two posts say, it will reinforce your loft and add support.
