I only do a bit of framing from time to time, but I see no value in a layout stick, am I missing something? whats wrong with a tape and square?

I must be missing something.

 

Did you check Amazon? Or Renohardware? I think they have them.

I have been using the Big Foot layout stick for years now. We have never had a problem with accumulated error. Here is my thinking: We are supposed to gap sheathing anyway right? So if we accumulate a small amount of error (pencil thickness or even Sharpie thickness), that gives us room to gap.

This is much fast than a square. I learned that way. But in the long run, it probably isn't that bid a deal, just convenient

I've tried them. They always ended up some where else than where I needed it.

Made several & had a Fab shop make several.

In a non sanctioned speed ball contest, way back in the olden days, tape & square won hands down.

 

Hmmm, in 23 years doing this i've never seen one of those. I could do it faster with a tape and a square i'm sure.

what is the advantage of a lay out stick?

 

I can see getting way off by using one of those. I always like to pull my measurement from as far as possible. Moving that thing 15 times down a long wall can't lead to a perfect layout.

 

I honestly think those layout stick thingy's are overrated.

I've gave them a shot from time to time over the years, just to realize that they are a HUGE waste of motion!

I agree with smuhh tape ,measure this is the first i ever heard about a layout stick

 

Just one more tool to have to put away at the end of the day. I prefer to keep it lean with tools on most framing sites. We never even bring a chop box or table saw out until we start punch out.

 

I'm actually surprised by the comments against the layout stick. I have found it to be very fast, especially on long walls. We've been using one now for 7 or 8 years (same one I think). I leave it out through the whole job and we put it away when we clean up.

Its cheap and useful for us. Maybe I need to try it the tape and square way again.

Don't be surprised by the comments. If it works for you keep doing it. The only guys who have comments that don't make any sense are the ones who never tried it. Until they try something, they can't knock it. Don't make me send little Joey down to kick your ass...lol
