Hey Guys,

I have a customer that asked me to cut a laundry chute into theirs bathroom vanity to drop into their laundry room in the basement. Ceiling is open below so I know it’s possible

my question is what’s the best way to finish the cut inside the cabinet. It’s a shallow section of the vanity 14” deep x 16” wide.

Trim like a window? Drop in style access door?

Check code. Usually considered a fire hazard because it allows fire to easily pass from one floor to the next.

I've never done one, but investigated building one about 5 years ago, it needs to meet IRC section 602.8 for fire blocking. I had planned to have my hvac guy build me a 10×10 custom double wall duct like a chimney pipe

It got xnayed before I went to get approval from my inspection firm

Not legal tender on paper but it serves its purpose...I lined the lid with 1/4" steel and designed it so it to stay closed (won't stand on its own) and stove gasket, firestopped between floors and used 14" stove pipe. Works like a fooking charm!
