That's what I was thinking but a stairway does a similar thing, in any case it'd be a good idea to make the sides 1 hour.

 

1/2" birch ply covers the opening (box the opening as needed), hinges on the back side.

Pull door up by hand to catch on a rare earth magnet.

Maybe gas piston or similar on the back -- but any hinges, piston -- not in the opening -- get caught up with clothes.

It can be flush too depending how you box out the opening.

The hatch probably needs a self closing door and weatherstripped. Potentially both ends of the chute

 

Not legal tender on paper but it serves its purpose...I lined the lid with 1/4" steel and designed it so it to stay closed (won't stand on its own) and stove gasket, firestopped between floors and used 14" stove pipe. Works like a fooking charm!

 

We always include a self closure on the lid.
