Lauan is fine, althought there are two different types. The cheap one possibly will have voids which can cause dents and some glues can cause it to bleed through. SO, plywood is better and usually costs more, but if you get the better grade lauan it should be fine. What exactly was your discussion, which do you use?
If you read manufacturers specs for vinyl, they will warranty vinyl over Luan, but will not warranty bleed thru's and such.
Manufacturers would rather see AC plywood.
