I'm kinda up against that issue with my proposed shop building. Basically, it'll be a steel building like structure with a stick-built office on the front with a shed roof coming off the gable of the steel building. Trying to make it attractive is a challenge.

I think, for the simplicity and size, that building is pretty good looking. It does not look contemporary like a half gable tends to.

 

I have seen some twin-planed ones that look pretty cool.

Number 10 is interesting. Not all styles are for everyone, but boys, there will be some major changes in style as homes sizes get scaled back to affordable.

 

I think if you break it up, it gets it away from just looking like a box

I'm considering whether to go the easier route of a shed dormer or more time/money on a gable.

I like examples 2,4,5 on the site. I prefer shed styles that lean toward the Prairie style.

I'm in agreement on people scaling back on square footage. I really try to sell people on the trim. An Architect/Author- Sarah Susanka has a series of books on Taunton that are all about creating the not so big house. Using color and layout to make great spaces instead of BIG spaces.

The house plans I got for this originally called for a gabled
dormer.
While I was building,I decided to change to shallow
shed dormers for future expansion.
The roof pitch and design of your house may limit
your possibilities,but I thought I';d throw this out there
anyways.

 

Craftsman-style columns (done well) dresses up just about any structure, IMHO.

 

I took the design from some old interior columns that
I used inside.

 

Oldfrt, I do agree that shed dormers look good. I guess it's just a matter of taste to go with a shed roof. Shed roof design seems to fit in more with the "modern" style of architecture which is my least favorite. I appreciate your input and my hat's off to everyone's creativity.:thumbsup:

The shed roof I was referring to was the roof design that is half a gable roof like this:

 

When i designed this place, it started out with a much more multi-level shed roof design. After many modifications to the design, I ended up with this. The gable over the front door originally had a shed type slope as well.

I prefer the gable and hip roof design more even though the gambrel and mansards are architecturally pleasing too.

If you intersect it with a gable roof, it doesn't look too bad!:thumbsup: Nice design. I guess doing so tones down the ugliness(my opinion) of a shed roof.

 

Real or CGI?

Did you take the time to actually make a real world model or is that a computer rendering? The lighting makes it look more real than the typical rendering?
If so...What software.

I designed and made all the plans using Chief Architect X3. It's a Render, the renderings I did are from the same program, and the house is in the building phase now. :thumbsup:
