Any vertical application, whether wood or FC is going to be more expensive. You need to be more diligent with the wrap & flashing, need to install horizontal strapping to fasten to, but can't create water stops that will trap water. Simply installing over siding, even with WRB, is a recipe for replacement in a short period of time. Water wicks through much easier, so you really need to treat it as a rain screen design.
