Just pay them their money to renew. Once the exam is passed to the best of my knowledge you don't need to take it again. I've been licensed since 2004 and not had to take the exam again.
Hi, Grumpy i'm gonna take my test again this will be the secound time, I wantd to ask do you or any one have any study guides or know of chapters I should reference that pertain to the (limited test). Its alot of material, pages and chapters, i just wanna study the right info for that test.

I am actually a female :) but yeah... any way for them to get their hand in the cookie jar and they will take advantage... the illinois roofing license exam has a 24% passing rate and costs $220 everytime you take it, I sat next to a man that was there for his 4th time... and another that was there for his 7th... all trick questions. Unbelievable.

It's not just about revenue. It's also about consumer protection. Licensing in our trade in our area of Chicago is something that is a necessity. I can show you pictures of disasters that were not the product of anyone that knew roofing. I'm not saying that the licensing in its' current form is perfect, and I wish the licenses were better enforced, but they are desperately needed.

Labor Con. attached is a Word document which gives you exactly which sections to study... I read the entire contents within this guide and passed my first time, however, I recommend focusing a lot of attention on SAFETY!

Grumpy, I understand that the exam and license is necessary but I am simply saying that the exam is insanely difficult filled with trick questions, which in my opinion, isn't exactly a measure of how much experience one has or the quality work one does but rather how good of a test taker you are. I sat next to a man that was there for his 4th time and his partner was there for his 4th time and they have been roofing for over 20 years...

All I am saying is that they need to tone it down and have fair questions. The IL department of prof. regulations also needs to answer their damn phone if they want us to pay all this money and "protect the consumers", they need to be accessible for questions we may have. Don't even get me started, the whole system is corrupt.

IL sounds like MN when it comes to renewing or obtaining a license. After I passed my tests (trade and bus/law) got my paper license 13 weeks later, that was in 2002.

The first time I renewed it took over 10 weeks to get my new license. They sent back my paperwork 4 times. The last time they saw I wrote my return address as being INC so they highlighted it and asked for all my paperwork for insurances to indicate INC!!! What they could have done and what they do now when you change from Sole/P to INC or LLC is issue you a new license number.

Calling them was a dead end as well. You would finaly get on the phone with someone after waiting a long time and they had no idea what was going on. They would ask there boss what my question was and got the same answer, no idea.

Finaly last year got the chance to do a job for one of the supervisors of licensing at the state so now renewing is a breeze!

Last year the state went from one year renewals to two year renewals. It just so happened I was on an even year so got a two year license right away. This year the odd years will send in for a two year.

Last year a week before renewal pulled permits for every Spring job to avoid waiting weeks for a new license. Ended up in the mail before the old one expired.
