how to firestop this attic with cathedral.

Just wondering how best to firestop this. on the left side I will probably stuff it with Rockwool. Do I need to do anything on the right side because it is open to the attic anyway? There is ventilation there, as well as in the cathedral ceiling. I could cut 2x6's and put them in each bay where the ceiling meets the side wall, which seems like it wouldn't do anything. My other thought was using drywall to drywall above the 2x4 which the ceiling drywall will be screwed to, just so fire in the attic doesn't spread to the area above the cathedral ceiling.

Curious why you think putting a 2x in the stud bay wouldn't do anything? It would have the same effect as having a top plate where the ceiling framing meets the wall, and prevent the stud bay from acting as a chimney.

Your best bet however might be to call your building department and speak to whoever handles the residential permitting, they'll advise on what they would consider acceptable fire blocking.

It wouldn't do anything on the side that is open to the attic, after looking more, I don't need fire locking where it opens to the attic. The other side I get conflicting information if I can stuff woolrock in there, so I will probably block it, but they are irregular spaces. I've long given up trying to talk to a local building inspector about little things, when I cant get any action on the big things. Took 2 1/2 months to get a building permit. They will put me out of business with wait times like that.

Fire blocking/ draft stopping.
  • Put angled blocking Âľ down from bottom of rafter/clg joists.
  • do it the same on both walls.
  • the attic space side should be horizontally blocked at the wall plate height if balloon framed or the wall plates do that.
  • throw in â…ť type x on the living side of the attic wall and roxul.

Imagine you’re a fire. How would you be slowed down in that space.

Once fire gets in the attic, it’s over.
You could sheet the attic side of the attic wall, like a party wall in a duplex, but these are fast becoming extreme ideas.

Or you could just see what happens at inspection.

I hope it works out smoothly for you.
