Not much help, but there was one like it at my grandmas house with a farm scene painted on it.

Are you doing away with the flue all together or are you just wanting to make it look better?

To make it look better, do like JBM advised. To do away with it, just cut it off flush, fill it and stone over it. Good luck :thumbsup:

If that doesn't connect into a chimney liner, I take it out and take out the mortar, cut bricks and brick up the hole. It's a messy job.

If it feeds into a liner, I just brick it up after cleaning the soot off the metal.

It's turning into a rental. Owners live there now and there was tile where the cement board is. I'm tiling there and was asked about covering the flue. I think I'll suggest cutting flush and finding a nicer cover.

how to finish this off

Looking at the brick work I don't see why it would matter. Looks like somebody laid the brick with their feet. Outside of that remove flue and brick over.
