Be sure and set a maximum daily budget that you can afford.
Geotarget ALL of your keywords.
Don't allow your ads to be shown in the "content network".
Think long-tail keywords - don't just target "remodeling" instead think of keywords & phrases that are very specific - like "bathroom remodeling in your city, state" or "tile flooring contractor". Also don't forget about all the names of your competitors as keywords!
Test, Track and Refine - then Test, Track and Refine again to infinity.
Like most things in life, you would be far better off to hire a pro to optimize and manage your campaign for you. The learning curve with PPC can be long and expensive.
