hey all.. im a taper from minnesota and im looking for a change of scenery. i have a couple friends that live in the san fran area of cali.. currently things are pretty bad here in the minneapolis area. people are bidding at .50 a sq for everything including board, and sub contracting im getting .13 a sq if im lucky for tape. i thought about the union but they are doing bad also..

anyone from the san fran, sacremento area doing decent? how is pricing both contracting and subbing for tape?

also, if im insured and incorporated through the state of mn, can i work in california legally?

thanks.

Not unless you are an employee.Other wise you will need to get a license.

San Fransisco is expensive to live in (even for us in L.A) so you would have to hit the ground running or have room an board set up cheap. and I concur with Jack on the licensing issue, except I don't know that you could work here even if you were an employee of a MN company.

Make sure to factor in the cost of living which is quite high in SF. As for working, you can work anywhere as long as you file permit with state board. Basically, they just want you to pay taxes. Don't forget if you've employee then you'll need State Worker Comps insurance as well. Usually about $2,000-3,000 deposit and 15-20% per employee. I only paid $1,000 down and 10% for my employee. I don't know how I got it so low. May be a computer glitch or may be I'm an Asian:whistling

Say hello to Mr. Arnold http://www.cslb.ca.gov/
and legally you'll be required to file permit in the county you're working in as well.

I was up in Sacramento doing full kitchen mod couple week ago. Rental prop is like less than a dollar/foot which is fair. Now this is Sacramt and is about 1 hr drive from SF.
Honestly if you really want to make money here in Calif, growing marijuana is the way to go. Especially in SF, a home of a pot heads. Hey may be you can specialize in odor-absorbent drywall!!!

I'm not so sure how well a taper would do, unless you also paint? Out here unless your on a union job or large commercial job..most GCs sub outt to someone that does the drywall, mud and paint all in one shot.
