I'm looking for some guidance on a home theatre I'm building . Nothing to crazy . I'd like to have the lights dim when the movie or DVR starts and maybe some fiber optic lighting in the ceiling . There's also two small windows that I'd like to have the blinds close . Does anyone know of a system that can be used with an iphone . Ease of use would be helpfull. Could someone recommend a name or two of system that can do the above .

Thanks Kenny

Yes, many but the 64k$question is do you want to be able to program it yourself?

I have my low voltage guy thats going to be doing the work and he asked if I had a certain system in mind . Told him I would get back to him on that . I'm trying to educate myself and got overwhelmed with all the different systems and options . As far as programing it , I'll leave it to the installer .

Then you should really seek his council, if he's asking you what you would recommend I'd have a hard time believing he does automation on a regular basis.

Got a budget in mind?

He does'nt do it every day , he runs all my low voltage wiring for alarms and cctv but he's not big on automation but capable yes . As far as budget , whatever it takes to get it done . Just liked to get some names so I can check it out on line .

First find out what he is certified in and what products he can actually get then go from there.

But if you just want me to throw out the products I'd use for a custom remote built off an iPhone I'd use an RTI XP3 or XP6 for the controls, somfy blinds, lutron lighting, numinus fiber optics...

I really can't stress enough that it really isn't the system you use but how it's set up...there are plenty of products that have the potential to perform exactly how you wish but they all rest on the skill of the programmer.

I agree , he also brings in a very experienced home theater expert for these jobs . I will have a consultation with both before we move ahead . I like to be a little educated on the subject so I know what I want and what questions to ask .
Check out Lutron for your lighting control and shades.

If their window coverings are too expensive then I would recommend using a product with Somfy motors. Their RTS motors are relatively straightforward to program. Blackout shades (cellular or roller) will darken the room a lot more than a horizontal or vertical blind. If they're on a northern elevation this isn't as much an issue, as long as you live in the northern hemisphere.

Just don't forget to order a URTSI II RS232 interface and remote to program the blinds. Lutron blinds in IMHO some of the best blinds ever made...but boy you pay for em.
AMX, Crestron and Extron make some very nice systems. They are a little pricy but they do the job. The downside is that they don't offer a "one-size-fits-all" solution and each system has to be custom built/custom programmed but it's well worth the money.

Hence a perfect application for rti.
