If you where hiring a painter what are some questions that you could ask him/her to be able to determine that he/she is a professional painter?

I don't think you can tell that way. The best you can do is watch them for 15 minutes, then you'll know.

The type of work you do will play a large role. If you do interiors in lived-in homes then honesty is critical. Do a credit check minimum. People who honor their financial commitments are less likely to rip off your customers.

Ask him---->Are you an interior or outerior painter?
I would ask to go see previously completed work.

I remember one guy would get them to paint red walls in to a white ceiling, patch a big whole, then if they did that correct, he would twist one up and ask him if he wanted a hit,if the guy said yes, he sent him walking lol

Dirty up a brush and have them clean it, see how they do. Test some general paint knowledge by asking questions. Also, I like the "see how they hold a brush" suggestion. Ask what paints they like, then ask them why.
