The schlep drive is demotivating after a while. I got another 25 or so hits. my god I was just looking for an entry level helper to grow and advance with us. Amazing. Welder and other very specific trades usually travel but there are larger jobs and not day to day.

speaking of horses. I make mine out 3/4 ply. Here's a pict with them loaded up with work table. the table top 3/4 ply is 3' x 5' has 1" holes all around for clamps and 1" x 16" grooves cut out to interlock with fold up horses. easy in / out of houses up/ down stairs min space in truck. the horses also have slots cut out on the side to load up with materials.
old door hinges and a some thing rope to keep them from expanding out too far.
about 30 min and less then 2-sheets of ply. very strong stable durable light and take up just a few inches.

ps i can't say enough about the kapex. cut 3" x 11.5" oak treads "0" tear out and still looking for the dust.

Nice design! I might steal it.

I haven't ever seen any like that. I like them:thumbsup:
Check out Basswood's on his FB page – Holy chit  They make me wet

Back to the OP - For guys that answer an ad, if in the first two minutes of the telephone conversation the question is “how much are you paying” ---- they’re gone – I hang-up!

Basswoods are awesome:clap: That guy is a hand.

I ran an ad in CL once for help. I put in the ad four things I wanted in the reply. No one read the ad, and just replied bs. If they can't follow simple written instructions out of the gate, it's not going to go well. I ended up hiring a guy I knew from another company part time. Good luck!
when I hire somebody from Craigs List that's pretty much how I do it.

I post a very long ad clearly describing what we do-and I post a clear description of HOW I want people to respond to the ad- basically I will not open any attachments or read any resumes-and I want them to write a basic paragraph telling me a little about themselves.

If they send me a resume I instantly disqualify them because they didn't follow directions

If they don't write a basic paragraph I disqualify them for the same reason.

I actually don't much care WHAT they put in the paragraph- I am just looking for an indication of whether they can follow directions and whether they can communicate effectively.

If they can't do those two things--------------------especially for an entry level position, any job site skills are meaningless.

Who builds horses anymore ??
Actually, we still build horses.

We have quite a few folding horses we use for Brake stands or light duty assembly/pain tables in the shop

on the job we use really old school style horses .

since we are working on 1880's-1920's houses and working with "obsolete" materials part of our "schtick" is a whole old school vibe.

Google "carpenters trestles" and you will see some similar to what we use. Ours have very wide tops( 2x8's or 2x10's) with the legs let into the tops and they are immensely strong. they last for many years.

Well, this is not going to be about building horses: ;)

I was going to start a new thread, but this one seem to have "the broad strokes" covered, and is appropriately named.

I posted an add on CL for an apprentice and 24 hours later have done 4 phone interviews. A few of the guys that responded actually sent me a resume.

I wasn't expecting that, but it shows good form. ( probably because I didn't request: "Please submit resume to:" )

Stay tuned for the conclusion to the CL Carpenter's Apprentice Saga:

My idea, (and pardon the redundancy if this was mentioned before) was to try and get ASVAB test scores, either from prospective "employees", or from the Governing Body That Controls and Dispenses, that information.

As I remember them, the ASVAB's were a mechanical, logical, and verbal aptitude test that was dispensed to students in 10, 11, 12 grade.

I took 'em.

These scores would be a gold mine for contractors, for potential candidates as apprentice carpenters, plumbers, electricians...etc. that haven't elected to go into trade schools.

As a student, who took the ASVAB''s, did not go into vo-tech school, and ultimately, did not join the Armed Services; I might have been persuaded into the trades after graduation before spending 2 years in college, to find out, that's not where I wanted to be.

My question is:

Is there any way to get a hold of those scores, OR; have the potential employee submit those scores as part of the application process?

You could knock out 15-20% of applicants who "are not wired that way", with these scores, and possibly even recruit, as the Armed Forces do.

Again, this is kind of a flyer, and if it has been mentioned before,
feel free to chastise me.

Anybody ever thought about this?

ASVAB tests are only required to join the military. When I was in high school (graduated 2006) we didn't have to take any of those "big" tests, but were highly encouraged to take the SAT's. My experience was that the schools push you towards college, not military. Which is probably why they were so hot on the SAT and not the ASVAB.

You could ask potential applicants to take a practice one and report their results to you.

Thanks.

This is what I was after. I wasn't sure if "they" still addminstered those test in high school or not...

Class of '92, so, I took them.

I can print out a "practice one", and have them take it at the end of the day.

Tim Faller has an exam, but its more for the "Leads".

I like that idea,

Thanks man!

I think that is the construction worker norm. Cell phone is the biggest production killer I personally would prefer they have a none working cell phone
