I beleive the "Handy Man" license being refered to is called "Peddler of Services" license.

In Duval County it runs like $50-$60. The temp license say's you can do ANYTHING non structual. When the permenant one comes it negates the first and then list's ALL the things that need seperate licenses.

Which is basically EVERYTHING from Painting to pressure washing (in St. John's at least)

The GC license (which is what the document looked like)is an open book test with an option to go to a class (not sponsered by the state) before the test to teach you how to take the open book test.

Am I in the ballpark here? or I'm I still in the parking lot tailgating?

The licenses you take by going through Prometric are county licenses, my licenses are Certified, which is a statewide license, the tests were open book, and yes there are prep classes that you can take, the state does not sponsor or endorse any of the prep classes.

Good job sir. The list of services covered is actually pretty extensive, nothing structural, nothing requiring specialty licensure, like electrical, plumbing, hvac, etc... I was shocked that I can install cabinetry, floor coverings, and most common problems. I cannot do bathroom remodels though because under the handyman stigma, I cannot change out major fixtures, such as tubs, toilets, and faucets.

I will be taking the RC license in tallahassee and am working with the Contractor's Institute to bring myself up to speed on Building codes in florida, as they vary greatly from New Jersey, with respect to hurricane construction, and code.

I commend Florida for taking such an active approach to licensing. I am glad to see a state that takes care of its' own first. I look forward to a long life here.

Donnie, I had nothing but the utmost respect for your attitude early in the thread. I commend you on helping a friend and taking a "money isn't everything" position. However, you quickly switched directions and began lashing out. Keep in mind that YOU came to contractortalk in search of help. Nobody on here sought you out, just to tell you that your solution was subpar. As in any other walk of life, if you pose a question you're going to get a variance in responses. If that strays from your preference then you need to surround yourself with "yes-men." I, personally, don't feel that's the best way to further one's knowledge but, do it however you want because it's not going to affect anyone here.

McCarty, I just want answers, I dont know what the solution should have been which is why I came here. I filtered the good info, from the rest, and learned something. I expect people to not have the same opinions as I do, and I dont want a yes-man response because that gets me nowhere. I could have just been happy with less comments like it's a waste of money, or it'll just be redone in a few years again, and more comments about why a certain material is better than another, post some experience, im all for it. If epdm membrane is not the right answer, then tell me why? and what is? I plan on redecking the place, pulling the bottom two courses of vinyl siding off, and using the techniques posted earlier.

If we can put all this nonsense aside, which I have helped fuel, I would like constructive answers. Why is EPDM membrane, not a good idea? Is a poly coat bette? or talk him into fiberglass, which was my first choice because I have done them before. Overall the deck plywood will be ripped up and replaced. The membrane will run about a foot up the wall and terminated. Is a foot good enough? there is a roof over the deck. I felt that a foot is ample, What is your opinion?

I put this information out there collectively, Im tired of typing all this out. I am looking for educated responses from legitemate field experience, not a dont do anything for friends, or it'll just get fixed again. I want it done right. Thanks.

All I wanted john, was good information. This guy has done nothing but insert his negativity in this thread. I quoted every post he made. nothing but negative bs, besides the first thread. If you reread the thread, I am just tired of repeating myself and defending myself to someone called "loneframer" from jersey, simply because he feels that the project will fail because he isn't doing it. In all reality he's probably a typical white trash hack from gloucester city or deptford, and he's pissed bacause he can't feed his addictions.

I just made an assumption, kind of like the assumptions he has made about me in this thread.

Like I stated before, Im just a guy trying to help a friend, and if I lern something new in the process, great. It's sad that his lack of desire to just lend a helping hand has turned this into such an entertaining thread for everyone.

And with comments like these, that will end this one. Speaking for the mods, we are really getting tired of the personal attacks. If you have a problem, please use the red icon and report the post.
