this is not my specialty.

My buddy had is house poorly rebuilt after a hurricane. He has a second floor balcony which is over his fully finished garage. the deck is trypical PT construction, 2x6 PT decking, BUT has been overlayed with 1/2"4x8 CDX and carpeted. He is getting some wicked leaks now which have ruined the 5/8" rock in the garage. I can easily fix the garage for him, I can repair the deck so it doesnt leak again.

Problem. I suggested a rubber membrane, properly installed of course, over the plywood, to be carpeted again. Cost is an issue and I am looking at well over $1000 for minimal membrane, .040 mil or similar. I then thought of using laticrete hydroban which I use on custom bath and shower applications which does a great job within its' parameters. Thats about $700 worth of hydroban.

Any other suggestions. The house is in the panhandle and backs up to the gulf of mexico about 75' back. currently the sealant used was aluminum roof coating under the carpet, but it has dried, and has splits. Of course the dummys never flashed the deck which is part of the problem.

Anyone use any other less expensive waterproofing barriers? Just looking for cheaper fixes, remember it has to skin over because a new carpet will be installed directly over it.

thanks in advance.

All I wanted john, was good information. This guy has done nothing but insert his negativity in this thread. I quoted every post he made. nothing but negative bs, besides the first thread. If you reread the thread, I am just tired of repeating myself and defending myself to someone called "loneframer" from jersey, simply because he feels that the project will fail because he isn't doing it. In all reality he's probably a typical white trash hack from gloucester city or deptford, and he's pissed bacause he can't feed his addictions.

I just made an assumption, kind of like the assumptions he has made about me in this thread.

Like I stated before, Im just a guy trying to help a friend, and if I lern something new in the process, great. It's sad that his lack of desire to just lend a helping hand has turned this into such an entertaining thread for everyone.

WOW:eek: I guess we agree to disagree.

I didn't see LF get "pissy" until others did.

If you follow his posts he's usually the level headed guy.

Wait 'til some of the real sharks sniff out this post!

Do what you want with this advice:

Your not here to make freinds but to get advice right?

Well with a chip on your shoulder and a small post count you'll get your threads jacked by the wolves and accomplish nothing.

To each their own though.

Last week it was MZ, - - this week it's Donnie, - - someone alert me who's off the island for next week, will ya's??

Jesus H. Chee-rist, - - the guy wants to help his friend out.

Have I mentioned I help my cousin out with his house for free on the weekends, and my elderly neighbor some nights, - - or does that get me tossed, too??

Seems like a downturn in the economy is being taken out on fellow Americans, - - I've not seen this here before.

Hey Tom, my buddy, like many people are struggling to get by. I feel bad, and although I do not deal with waterproofing, I am helping him out. It sounds like he is on the verge of foreclosure and I caught him mention selling, so I am assuming thats why he wants to fix the deck now, not that it is anyones business as to why I am helping a friend.

Its a business tax RECEIPT, and it doesnt allow me to do windows. Never said it did.

listen, this is old, are you really trying to call me a liar or something? I just posted the pdf file from one of the counties. Yes it needs to be done for each county, the facts are the facts. You have a state license, great, i however am still establishing myself here, whats your point? I spent $450 in book and tested through prometric. wtf? I have my competency card, and am licensed to install windows, doors, and siding in specific counties. You dont have to worry about it because you have a state license. Get off my back, when you have no idea.

Donnie

I don't know you. But from your bitchy tone...........I don't like you.

If you ask for advice - take it - ignore it - WHATEVER!!! But shut the hell up. How big of a loser, asks for advice, and then chooses to insult and call names, those who present an opinion other than yours.

How gay? You actually called someone a ****. That's so sixth grade. (Takes one to know one)

You were just looking for agreement in the direction you already decided to go.

You pay for what you get. So maybe your friend will have a deck that lives a couple more seasons.......most of these guys here build things to last as long as possible.

Oh, and before you start bragging - fill out your profile - I would like to know who you really are. That "hiding anonymous" login name actually fits something you said about these 2 cents keyboard cowboys......in my mind - that's you.

Just my thoughts

WELL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

I beleive the "Handy Man" license being refered to is called "Peddler of Services" license.

In Duval County it runs like $50-$60. The temp license say's you can do ANYTHING non structual. When the permenant one comes it negates the first and then list's ALL the things that need seperate licenses.

Which is basically EVERYTHING from Painting to pressure washing (in St. John's at least)

The GC license (which is what the document looked like)is an open book test with an option to go to a class (not sponsered by the state) before the test to teach you how to take the open book test.

Am I in the ballpark here? or I'm I still in the parking lot tailgating?

Florida does not have a Handyman license, there are some counties that may sell a Business Tax License that lists Handyman on it, but you still need either a state or county license to do most things, including drywall and painting.

To install windows and or siding you need either General, Building, Residential or a specialty license.

The licenses you take by going through Prometric are county licenses, my licenses are Certified, which is a statewide license, the tests were open book, and yes there are prep classes that you can take, the state does not sponsor or endorse any of the prep classes.

Donnie, I had nothing but the utmost respect for your attitude early in the thread. I commend you on helping a friend and taking a "money isn't everything" position. However, you quickly switched directions and began lashing out. Keep in mind that YOU came to contractortalk in search of help. Nobody on here sought you out, just to tell you that your solution was subpar. As in any other walk of life, if you pose a question you're going to get a variance in responses. If that strays from your preference then you need to surround yourself with "yes-men." I, personally, don't feel that's the best way to further one's knowledge but, do it however you want because it's not going to affect anyone here.
