I am a small remodeling contractor. Floors, tile, showers, etc. Always learning.

 

The tile is broken, dig it out and replace it.

Replace it. It's far easier and better. Break the tile into small pieces with the claw of a hammer, without going through the backer. If you try to pry it out, you run the risk of chipping adjacent tiles.

 

Thanks for thee feedback everyone. Ill be breaking it out. I figured I'd need to but was hoping to avoid that.

 

Use a grout saw first to remove all the grout. That leaves a space around tile so you don’t put pressure on the adjacent tiles.

 

Sometimes it's easier to sacrifice the tile next to it and replace 2 instead of doing surgery for 1
