My subs don't really like to do anything over a 35' run with 5" on one downspout.

 

On the restaurant we're doing now subbed the flat roofing to a company who's been around for over 100 yrs. Insurance company paid for the roofing work both pitched and flat so decided to call in the heavy hitters and have it done right. Anybody ever see 1.75in hail damage a hot mop roof?

The salesman who's been with the company for 38yrs said his son is a roofer/siding/gutter guy. We were talking gutters and he said his kid has made a killing on his gutter machine. His best money maker was the job he did where he ran off 700ft of gutter ONE RUN. I asked how big of an army he used to hang it and he said he just drove his trailer along and hung it as it came out! Must have been pretty low to the ground to pull that off!

 

My gutter guy tells me 1200sq ft. of roof can handle one oversized down spout, nothing more.

 

Moderate slope. 800-1,000 depending in valleys and overall run.

 

Just started to look at gutter machines myself...pretty sure theirs money to be made running it yourself. Plus you can try to do crazy runs if you own the thing

 

Exactly why I bought my machine... Crazy runs.

 

I would say do it, but make sure you have enough downspouts installed for easy and quick flow of water. If you have the water sitting in the gutter too long before drainage, you will have deterioration to the gutters. I would also recommend to the property owner to install gutter guards if there is a lot of trees around. If the downspouts clog or a dam is created then rain water will accumulate and weigh down the gutters.

You shouldn't have any issues installing that gutter. My company (1 Fine Gutter) is fairly new, and we found out real fast how to install the long one's. It was our third month in business when we were called about installing seamless gutters on a horse stable, when we took the measurement, we were a bit intimidated. 171' on each side. Using .032" aluminum coil is key. Snap every hanger into place as it feeds from machine, and have done buddies ready to grab on. Both sides turned out really nice, but we were sweating the entire time, one mistake and it's over... My guy won't go more than 80' without an expansion joint. He said he did 83' one time and it wrinkled. So you phucked up ya did

 

We are putting two 125' on a rec center this week. A lot has to do with temp at installation. This is about as long as im comfortable going one piece. Another job is 175' long and im gonna do it in two pieces with a small space in between for expansion with some metal covering the two end caps.

 

Ever use the pre made expansion joints? I've got a couple in the trailer just in case but have not yet had occasion to use them. They're kinda pricey.
Been in business 5 or 6 years now and 87' is the longest I've run into yet. I priced the local fire hall earlier this summer. They never got back to me and never hired anyone else either. I'd definitely do that one in 2, possibly 3 pieces.

 

Client wants a seamless continuous span , it is 70 feet long two downspouts on either end , house has foundation problems so it slopes to one side significantly. Should I do one 70 foot continuous span or put in an expansion joint with end cap at 40 feet? I think with the slope to the house the gutter will not drain correctly if not continuous with no obstructions

 

Throw up a seamless 6” gutter and it might be able to handle most of the volume. Still have two downspouts though. Try to get at least some of it to run towards the other hole.

I’ve done an entire complex of 70’ runs with one downspout. (6”&3x4 Design wouldn’t allow a second. Told them not responsible if they over flow. Was able to handle it miraculously. Probably overflows during a monsoon type of Rain, but so do rivers and streets. Lol. Was 15 years ago and they’re still up.[emoji106]

You have to worry about thermal expansion in gutters and most manufacturers will spec each gutter run not to exceed 50' which been an industry-standard and each 50' run to be served by a leader.

 

Just looked at this house. 73’ one way 5” gutters. Guy said they’ve been up for 35 years. No issues. Talked him into upgrading to the 6” and 3x4 though [emoji106]

This is an old thread! I've done a few miles of gutter since then. Probably the longest one piece run I've done is 86 feet. We've done a lot of one piece runs in the 70'+ range over the years with no issue.
Just did a pair of 125's on a job last week but those were seamed in the center with a 2 inch overlap. Fortunately the building ran in our favor and we didn't have to crown and run both ways anywhere on it for downspout placement. Both sides of the building pitched toward the same end. Of course there was more than one downspout per gutter but that was easy with the entire gutter pitching in one direction.

 

We redid the gutters at our old shop at 100'. Used shop for 10 years without issue. I would rather have it grow at each end, than have a center joint that will eventually leak.

 

I’ve done tons of 100’ with no issues. There is no doubt that a center joint will leak. Ive never used one of those, but have seen them all leak. I’d rather have the buckle

I put 165' one piece 6 inch on my uncle's lumber barn we put up for him, never thought about it being an issue.

I'll have to check it out next time I'm down there. I wonder if it could eventually break the screws in the hidden hangers?
