Google Negative keywords
I have been using goggle for about 6 months now, I spent a total of $240.00, I set up my campaign and set my spending target low. I did this because I’m trying to get a feel for the market keywords and how and when customers use them. As I’m better getting orientated with Google I noticed I spent $240.00, ON WHAT??, No one called me, so I’m looking at my Google campaign and I find at the bottom of the keyword tab: “Negative Keywords”, it shows me all keywords that Google has charged me, I spent $86.00 on the key words Addition & additions, So I keyword Addition & additions in every combination I could think of, my web site never was before the 3rd page, so why I’m I spending that much money on keywords that are so general and that no one will see my site, this may be that my keyword on my site are not optimized, so for now what I did was to “Excluded” these keywords and many others words that I was paying for that had nothing to-do with my site or a carpenter looking for a job ETC.
I find it interesting that I never heard the term Excluded or negative keywords before, well I am new
And Google hides it at the bottom of the page and it’s always minimized, I think they don’t want you knowing why you are paying for crap keywords?

I'm pretty sure what JV meant by the drop by Google over time is days and weeks, not hours. Since this is an active thread, it's going to keep climbing until it dies down.

Check it in a month or two, better yet, 4-6 months (put it on your to do list while you are educating yourself on SEO).

CB, I picked up a SEO for dummies and Google Adwords for dummies the other day and have been reading. I’m learning
Also picked up a video on E-bay for $8.50, Stomper Net. It’s a 44 hr lesson on SEO optimization
Good stuff, I have already applied some of their recommendations to my site, time will tell
Anyway Total investment cost: Books $45.00 plus video =$53.50, oh and the $240.00 for my adwords for the last 6 months $293.50.
Other Problems with SEO

Some SEOs do stupid stuff that will get your site banned from search engines. These people are not the only big problem in the SEO industry. Some SEO firms are too lazy to do a good job.
Sure a site will not likely get banned if you are not aggressive. Of course many terms absolutely require research, a ton of effort, and extensive link building.
Link building (or creating ideas that naturally build links over time) is the most time-consuming and most expensive part of SEO. Often it is also the more important parts of SEO, sadly the process is skipped or done inadequately by many members of the SEO community.

David, you'll get no argument from me about the stupid stuff some people do in the name of SEO. I'm an admin for a small biz forum, and I'm sure the admins and mods here would agree with what I am about to say. Forums have to deal with all kinds of stupidity from people using lame SEO tactics. Most of their methods are very obvious to an experienced mod or admin, but we also need to be vigilant about the more cunning ones.

I've seen plenty of cases where when you track forum spam back far enough, the trail leads to a so called SEO company trying to link build for their clients. I feel sorry for the clients who were taken in by these scammers. The lesson here is be very careful who you hire for SEO and what methods they use.

This has been said by other members here, but should be repeated again: You don't have to become an expert on SEO because you already have a contractor business to run, but you do need to become well informed enough to avoid being taken in by snake oil.

Cb I found a cool SEO site, this SEO site seams legit, I looked her company up doing my normal keyword checks
I asked Jill if I could post some of her insights to contractor talk, I hope she agrees
Anyway on her site she recommends the use of WEB STATS.COM to track your site
$10.00 a month thru paypal, why did I mention pay pal, because it my opinion only legitimate companies use PayPal

I just want to report that I started doing my own SEO optimizing, I got 3 phone calls today
2 where from Google mapping, all 3 said my web site was the deciding factor in calling me, but it was my SEO optimizing that got them there

Check your page titles. And you are using a lot of <span> tags which should be avoided, use CSS instead and keep your html clean.

wanted to post an update on the "google negative keyword" and how well this forum was ranking for this term.

I tried to post an image to show the position of this thread in google search...have to get to my 15 posts...anyways this thread is now listed at #25.

As we can see it did not take long for it to drop in the rankings...one reason might be because somewhere along the way the thread lost its focus....

I don’t think we will see anymore post from SEO on this tread, which has caused the activity to slow down
I wonder if this thread had 2-5 post a day, what would the Google ranking be?
I just checked ranking for “Google negative keywords” Page 3 #26
I think putting the words "Google negative keywords" in title at every post helps too?
Google negative keywords

Post has climbed to #15
Here is the crazy part
Last night when I checked there was two posting with Google negative keywords
One was under the other; under the first post it says “21 post- 5 authors”
The second post says 12 post- 4 authors; it’s this second post that climbed the Google keyword ladder
So the post that was less popular had better ranking? I’m going to go back and count how many times and where the words “Google negative keywords” are found
Chain Saw post

wait a couple of days and search "Infant Chain Saw"
Infant Chain Saw

what am i looking for? web site or post?
I find it interesting that I never heard the term Excluded or negative keywords before, well I am new

As usual, there has already been lots of helpful information posted to your questions. Since you are on the DIY route, hopefully you might find this information as helpful as I once did.

1. There is an ad at the bottom of this page for PerryMarshall. His adwords guide is a good investment for anyone wanting to try the PPC system. When Perry started selling this guide a few years ago I actually had a testimonial on his website, it might still be there somewhere.

2. Where I really learned "adwords" was from an E-Book titled "Google Cash" released by a marketer named Chris Carpenter. When you bought the eBook you were given a "special" report written by one of his succesful affiliates. This 18-19? page report was the most eye opening piece of information for me on Adwords. This was at least 4-5 years ago, and the info given is still as relevant today as it was then. The basic "core" principal of Adwords and Google has NEVER changed. They just get better and better at implementing it. RELEVANCY

If you Googled for "Google Cash" I am sure you'll find it for free or dirt cheap somewhere.

As far as SEO goes, you've already mentioned you purchased StomperNet? Brad and Andy put out excellent information on SEO, and you should spend the time to study and implement their strategies. They have managed to retain top rankings for HIGHLY competitive keywords for several years. I had a testimonial on their website too :)

And as for this thread, forums are quickly becoming powerful websites within Google's Algorithms. They are places where people are sharing experiences/information (almost always unique/original) and they can categorize the information based on thread titles. If you've ever searched for a "solution" to a problem you were having with a computer for example chances are you found a forum post in the top 5.

Do you have local community forums where someone may come on and ask a home improvement question? Now that Google Local takes those forums into account having a presence there could be a valuable asset for your SEO locally (google maps).
