I am build a small 16'x16' shed and wanted to put a gambrel roof on it.
My question is can I get away without putting in ceiling joists? There will be a 8x16 loft which will have to have joist obviously, but I wanted the other half to be open all the way to the top with no joist. Is this possible or at 16 feet wide is it structurally unsound? Thanks for the help!

Alot of older barns where build gambrel roofs and a whole lot wider then 16' and are still standing today . So I would say yes you can. It is all in the design of the roof.

Without ceiling joists, your gussets have to be as strong as they would need to be for a flat roof made from 4 4' pieces of lumber spliced with gussets.
