I'm helping someone frame out walls in a basement. The floor is concrete and walls are cinderblock.
They plan to anchor each stud into the cinderblock wall with tapcons. I believe this is a lot of extra work, extra costs etc.
I made a bullet point list as to why it shouldn't be done this way.
• 1) It will weaken the cinderblock wall at every tapcon screw, giving insects and spiders an entry way as well as moisture.
• 2) Extra work drilling pilot holes in concrete.
• 3) Extra Costs using tapcons, sealer around tapcons and in the future repairing the deterioration.
• 4)when hanging anything on the studs, such as shelves, the weight will put extra stress on the tapcons, expediting unnecessary deterioration from holes that shouldn't have been drilled at all.
• 5)not doing a job the correct way will result in hastened need to redo the job. Not to mention possibly extra cost to the homeowner if/when selling the home if there's excessive deterioration or the job being done incorrectly doesn't go unnoticed.
I don't want to attach my name to it being that I believe it's the incorrect way to do, it will cause unnecessary damage and deterioration and will need to be redone sooner than later.
What would you do if you were in my position?
