Learnt something like this in trade school many moons ago, never ever even thought about it till I seen this.
Just not very common in Belfast homes or in Ontario ones for that matter.

That is a method, but it is not the only one. They had it tough because of the arch they were making, too though. The one in the original post needed no brick cutting, and they probably just measured exposed corners to keep the spiral on track over regular falsework.
