fireplace retrofit

5067 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gobigink
I'm working on a house in Medford and we're gonna be building a second story. This additional floor will make the existing fireplace too short according to code. We need the 2 feet above any combustible materials.

My question is, "How can I pass code with my existing fireplace.?" "Is my only solution to build up the fireplace to a height that will meet code, or is there another solution that is possible?"

If I need to build up the existing fireplace meet code requirement, how difficult is this to do, and how costly is it?

Thank you,

Nick

Wow MIKE............. is it on an outside wall, do you have plans, do you know all the codes in his area, Oh I forgot you are the know it all.

AI am not worth of your abundance of knowledge oh great one?
pondman, must you???
Yes, I must. Not enough facts given for any answer like that. Assume existing fireplace is masonary for this purpose.

A. Is it on outside wall? It must be for direct vent to work.

B. What is the size of the opening?

C. Will DV fit in that opening.

D. With all the money used to retrofit existing fireplace, just continue flu and chimney up above 2nd floor.

Just finished a 2nd story addition and did just that. Cost was about $1750

we do have an outside wall. Direct venting sound like a good option that i hadn't considered.
