Fire Pit with stone veneer

2770 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  JBM
I'm looking to construct a square shaped fire pit with stone veneer on the outside. Any recommendations on what material the pit should be constructed with? Fire brick lined with CMU and the stone veneer attached to the CMU? Thanks.

sounds like a decent plan to me
Don't be surprised or disappointed when your top perimeter stone cracks from the heat.
Should someone be surprised when the stone at the face of their fireplace cracks? I would say so. Just line the pit with firebrick and keep the fire in the middle of the pit.

Are you referring to the cap stone? I plan on putting a 14" cap however it would be flush with the firebrick and therefore have very minimal exposure to the heat. Would that still be a concern?
Also, do you all think its necessary to grout the CMU solid? I only plan on having 3 courses with only 2 of them above grade.
necessary, no, not a bad idea, sure. semi solid blocks are used in fireplace construction mainly around combustibles, not really a concern in a firepit, but certainly not a bad idea for the minimal added cost.

Structurally speaking, there is not need to grout a small wall like that. Another option would be to fill the cells with insulating material.
You might want to leave a bond break between the firebrick and the block for good measure.
