Adhesive and criss cross nails to hold until adhesive drives.

 

Put up wood blocking, screwing into metal studs, use adhesive. Then just shoot nails into blocking.

 

There's self drilling trim screws available, too.

 

That's the best IMO. Almost any drywall supply house will have them. Put up miles of chair rail in commercial with these....Crown is a little more difficult. Base is a breeze as long as you drive em straight

 

Senco makes 15ga finish nails especially for metal studs, they work perfect for that type of application. I can't remember the product number but you can get them in every size.

Glue and regular finish nails have always worked for me. They shoot right through the steel.
Even on 20 ga.
Have to shoot them straight though.

 

I recently had to pull of some trim in a church that was installed with trim head screws. Not fun. Holds like no other.

Are there some that work better than others? We use GRK trim screws a lot. It'll be stained Hickory trim, so the smaller the holes the better.

 

I have the ET&F T-nailer for outside trim and it's great. I don't have that one that shoot trim pins. I would only use the ET&F if the cross pinning would not work.

Last metal stud condo i did i just used a regular 18 gauge gun.

Just had to replace the driver when the job was done...

 

My first post. I work high rise in condos. All studding is with metal studs. All we use is parquet glue or PL on the back of the casing and nails until the glue dries. If your putting casing on a knockdown metal frame then u need PL and trim screws

 

Personally I have always used adhesive and shot regular nails, criss crossing as someone else mentioned. Never had an issue nailing into the metal studs as well.

Only exception is a large heavy crown, in that case I have ripped backing to match the angle, and screwed it into the metal framing, doesn't take that long and the crown is real easy to install, can be nailed anywhere along it, and nails nice and tight.

Will have to try out the self tapping trim head screws, I've used them for exterior stuff but never for interior finishing.
