My sewage ejection pump made some loud sick noises last night before it flipped a breaker and quit working all together. I plugged it in elsewhere but with no results. Is there a common cause or something I could try before paying someone to make things right again?

You could remove the cover and take look at the float and make sure it didn't get stuck or jammed. Depending on the age of the pump and usage it might be time for a new one. Ejector pumps are kind of pricey and not sure if rebuilding is a good option....either way it is messy job.
