Difficult clients

Was digging through old threads and noticed a lot of you guys mentioning the need to pick your clients carefully, and that being able to see difficult ones coming was important. What exactly are you guys looking at? I'm not bidding my own jobs and won't be for some time, but, much like with reading plans, figure it won't hurt to learn now and start noticing patterns. What are things you guys look out for and notice?
Anything that's an immediate "nope" vrs just something to keep in mind?
Thank you

Sometimes. I tend to rub dirt in everything and shrug it off, then you show up to work one day and realize your legs won't work properly and your lungs are full of garbage cause you refused to take a day off. Oh and almost puking in front of the inspector. That's a memory I'll cherish. 😂 I'm guessing my next thread will be asking how do you know when to take a day off.
What is this "day off" of which you speak 🤔

I tend to run until I drop. I'll go months inbthe summer without a real day off.

Eventually, my body tells me. I start to hurt, my breathing gets labored, I get loopy in the head and become super grumpy. Among other things.

I finally just have to shut down for a long weekend or so.

This year I have slowed down and scheduling has allowed me to work on projects at home a bit more and let my body and mind rest.

I read something years ago that said we tend to run faster than our minds can think when we get busy.

We need to slow down a bit so our thinking can catch up with our running. I am a believer in that.

I think smaller one and two band types have the most risk of that. There is nobody else to take up the slack. Don't work don't make money.

Now the problem with slowing down is I tend to get lazy. What's one more day of slacking, or putting off bids, etc. Then it's two days, then a week.

It can be a double edged sword.

It is wierd when you finally get motivated again. Sometimes you didn't even know you were worn out, burned out, worked out or whatever you call it.

But once you are recharged, you definetly know it.

I used to work all of the time and as I got older realized it was one of the dumbest things I could have done. It took time away from my family and really wore down my body and I am paying for that now.

In the last five years I have not worked on a job on a week end with out taking days off during the week. I work shorter hours daily, and I don't do deadlines. Luckily I don't do that many estimates and never at night or weekends, if the work that needs to be done is that important they will take time off or come home early to talk to me.

I should have done it from the start

I have been and can easily continue to be a workaholic, guess now a recovering one.

I wish I took a few more days off years ago. You can never get that time back.

When you are getting really worn/ frazzled a day or two off will pay you back big dividends. Otherwise you get too close to burn out...it's great to live what we do, but when we push ourselves to the point we hate it I not good for us or our loved ones.

The people around you are affected as well.

I will do "sprints of work" then a few 3/4 days and a day off. This seems to be working better. My wife seems to appreciate it.

I have tried to bring and get some sort of project I can do at the house. Cabinet doors, counter top..

Just working around the house for a weekend can relieve stress, play homeowner, go to H. Depot for those stupid little things you put off , get some mulch and fertilizer with all of the other Happy Home Owners....

Put a few 16' pieces of Trex through the sun roof of the wife's car....( Saw that on the way home Friday night, lane going opposite direction)

I propose a ten day week. Seven days work, three days weekend.

This weekend

Cut the lawn, cleaned the gutters and down spouts, cleaned a bunch of windows, finished setting up the patio, helped our son with his car...and probably few other things...

Last weekend worked half day on Saturday, then it was two days of inlaws.

Worked too many two and three day weekends to meet schedule or what ever
