I once did volunteer work for my city. We took a whole city street and cleaned it up. Painted all the homes put fences around the yards, landscaped every yard all in one day. I was a team captain my team was the city employes including the mayor, city attorney, city manager. It was a lot of fun, really cool bossing the mayor around. Each team had a home to do. They had a DJ in the street with lots of food. That's something they could do with the Detroit community.

From the article it sounds like it's not that dissimilar in parts.

If I were less burdened(read: comfortable!) I'd consider it. Again, from that article it sounds like it's already got the seeds of gentrification planted. Good for them. Rebirth stories are the best.
