Cross Promotional Advertising

I am about to meet with some other local business's to see about setting up some cross promotional advertising campaigns. My idea will be to either offer discounts on my services to their customers or maybe paint their front door free with any service they purchase from me.
Anyway the whole idea is I hook up their customers with a deal or some sort of freebie, they get the credit for the service or discount, I get the work and a larger customer base.
I think I should get some pretty nice cards or something made up with some sort of VIP logo on them, that way the customer will feel that it is something special to be given one, instead of just being handed a coupon.
Anybody else ever run a promotion like this ?
Thoughts and comments are welcome.

Easy referrals

Count me in. Like you, I've been meaning to do this for years. A fantastic way to get free leads, with credibility built in.

I thought about a really nice leather folder with pockets for business cards of all the other services. Some kind of point system to recognize (and motivate) the best participants. On so on...

I PM'ed you with my phone number.

Are you talking about business's like other contracting trades or business's like restaurants and barbershops?
I'm slowly doing this-

A mortgage broker I work with has been putting together a local "business service/discount" network. It will be marketed to larger companies, as an employee benefit. We're in there with a few small discounts, and the opportunity to be the "go to' service company for a few things, and have our info presented to the larger firms in the area.

Networking takes time, but working with other businesses is huge! IMO

It kinda has the potential to work either way. If you think about where your targeted customers shop, eat or whatever, then that should be where you would want to do your promotions. I think it will work better with a smaller business, because I dont want to deal with a corporate office, but the type of business could be anything your potential customers would shop at or obtain services from.
I understand about 2 contractors in different fields trading leads and things, I want to do that also, but I also want other companies to give me referrals. I figure people get their walls painted alot more then they have a new roof or room addition, so I need to make sure my name is being sent out by more then a roofer and a remodeler , I want it handed out by everyone.
