I would like to know whether there is any way to lower and beef up the ceiling joists (rafter ties) in the type of older home pictured in the images below. I would imagine adding collar ties + the new ceiling joists below the top plate would help resist outward forces, but what about that red portion (vertical 2x6s, and above that horizontal 1x6s, then the roof rafters on that), there would be a lot of downward force looking to peel that up if not braced somehow I would imagine.
