I,m wondering what kind of spans I can get away with. For a deck can span 16 ft. with a 2x8. And can I span 12 ft. with a 2x6?

Allowable Span

2x8 at 12" on center is ok at 16' if you use "Select" grade structural Material.

2x6 at 12" t on center to span 12' is the same with "Select" grade structural Material.

CFC - that's a bit dangerous don't you think? "one and half times the width of the lumber you are using"

Don't you take into consideration wood species, joist spacing and beam spacing as well as live and dead loads?

This seems like over span to me. The last 2x6 underfloor I have done was beam runs every four or five feet. And you can't span a 2x10 on 16" c. over 13'8 or you need to got on 12" c. So this seem's a little fraudulant.
