Are general contractors given a discount at Lowe's? If so, what %. We receive 15% from the local yards.

Hello
I was told they USE TO give -10% to contractors. I did not have my lic. then though. I never got a discount. Later I was told, after they went to the large store/warehouse, they cut prices and that everyone got "contractors price." Maybe someone just didn't like me? I always try to stay with the local guys anyway, I think they give me better service.

I used to get the 10% contractors discount from Lowes.......got it for years. Then one day they told me that they weren't doing it anymore. When I asked why, I was told "because Home Depot stopped doing it, so we don't have to do it anymore". I stopped buying there that day, and for the most part I use only local yards now.

I don't think either blowes or home cheapo give contractor discounts. I did however recently see a discount on paint at home cheapo, but it requires that you buy a specific amount. Something like 60 gallons. Have to ask the contractor services desk.

Home cheapo doesn't even give discounts to their employees.

I buy a lot of moulding and there's no way I would ever get it at either of those places. I can get it for a 1/3 of the price easily elsewhere.

This is not always true. I found that my yard stocks 3 5/8" crown for .74 a foot for MDF, but home depot, if you buy in the Pro Pack, will sell you 3 5/8 crown in PFJ for .55 a foot. I also recently got a small batch of clear pine. HD and Lowes are $2.04, my yard was $1.74 for the $30 a would have saved, I just went to HD....
However, if you go to buy paint grade crown outside of a pro-pack....forget it! $1.27 a foot for MDF $1.37 for PFJ

Thanks Ray, good to know that.
I asked about the contractors discount a couple of years ago when Lowe's built a store in a nearby town.

They said if you used their credit card you got coupons for % off in the mail later. Or something like that.

I forgot the particulars to it, didn't sound like enough of a deal add another line of credit to my stretched out budget.

I'll definitely be asking about the military discount.

#1 Lowes and HD are locked in a death match with each other. They have lowered prices to the bone to screw each other, just like the airlines.

You guys do know that right? If you've been around for even a little while you know the old routine of the regular lumber yard being more expensive then HD and Lowes? They would need to raise prices 10% just to give contractors a discount. Neither one is going to make that move, afraid the other one won't do it and then they lose their main advantage over the other one, just like the airlines, no different.

#2 HD and Lowes are homeowner oriented businesses not contractors.

I have been given 10% of a few times but only when spending over $2000. They are tight as arse holes in lowes. I use them a lot because most of my customers like to go out and pick their own stuff for a build and the only local place is lowes but when i supply my own gear then i use local builders yards. They are always cheaper no matter what im buying and thats with only small discount. Plus most of the gear from builders yards is better quality anyway. But lowes will match prices but it's a hassle.

I spent at least that each month the first three months I had an account at Lowes......but each of those months they screwed up my billing and it was WAY harder to get fixed that at a local yard. Therefore, I canceled my account, but continued to get the discount until they stopped it all together.

Lowe's - it depends on the Commercial desk from everything I have seen & been offered (half price on delivery) - need to have a commercial account of course (Thanks but no)

Home Depot - it is supposed to be $2500 before they can submit it, savings on wood can easily hit 20% while some specialty products they will not discount (generally for a full PT deck package it is around 10% off)

Local Lumber yards - it depends, the problem around here is actually getting the materials you need from them, have they stored them properly, etc... In most cases no, but it appears I finally found one that I will be using again

If everyone keeps buying their material from Lowes and HD instead of the local lumber yard, then one day there won't be a local lumber yard. When that happens do you thing you will get a discount from Lowes or HD? Do you think they will ever stock decent materials?

Don't support the "dumbing down" of the building industry.
Support your local lumber yards!

Cheapo and Blowes are just about useless for anything more than something small when I'm in a hurry. For kicks I put together an impact window and slider order through them and they gave me the "pro price" of about 120 bucks off a $2300 order. How generous of them.

The supplyhouses I now use have made up for any cost differential with superior service and much higher quality inventory. Plus no gaggles of illegals in the parking lots getting in your face asking for a job.
