I am making the jump from appliance service to ac units also. I have a central AC unit that pulls the contactor in when the TStat is turned on but although the contactor pulls in and holds, neither the fan nor the compressor starts. Is the contactor bad? The capacitor checks out ok. Thanks for your help.

I second BJD's response. I will also add if you do have power (208/240v.) and it is pulling in, most likely missing the contacts or the contacts are totally shot.

Contacts Had Ants In Them

I checked the contactor and found a lot of red ants had crawled inside and had actually "insulated" the points so that they did not make good contact. I changed out the contactor and the unit is working fine now. Thanks for the help guys!
