Customer wants to cantilever a small closet attached perpindicular to the floor joists and extending out maybe 24" or so from the exterior wall. House is already roughed in. Any suggestions for the cantilever short of cutting through a few floor joists to box it in? I was thinking maybe some notched-in angle iron or rebar for cantilevered support. Any suggestions?

24" isn't much. You can probably do with 45 degree supports back to the wall. Attach to solid blocking. Other imposed loads (like roof) might be an issue.

You can hang it from shear panels. Basically you attach 3/4" ply to the end stud and hang the projection from the ply. You might need ot raise the floor of the closet to be clear it can't support a floor load. ask your engineer about it. It should be pretty straightforward. I've done window bump outs with a seat like this before. Should be the same for a closet.
