Do you have questions regarding California Licensing?

I worked at the CSLB as an application technician for many years. I have a great deal of experience and would be happy to help.

Post your question and get a straight answer.

it was too late to find you

Mr.guru

we are Asian, and self-employed. Last month i sent the general B app for my husband, so you know what happened next . When i got the letter requiring doc about experience, i did some research on internet, so i found you ,at that moment I know we totally waste our time and money, I mean not filling out the app, not the exam fees ,not the book……we almost spent the whole year to learn the test, because my husband primary language is not English and as his translator in exam i know little about construction.

sorry for my poor English :) I write this using online dictionary.

2 years ago , i have the thought to get him a lic,but my husband didn't agree at first, he thought the language was a big problem. This year finally he thought I'm right to get things right.

so when we start, i translated the question which i have no idea what i am saying, you can image my husband can't get it right at first. He worked more than 7 years , sometimes worked for employer, sometimes got small contract of course no paper written. He is good at handwork. he has worked long time for hotel remolding and commercial building , he knows how to follow the code. So even if i can't translate the test question accurately but when i explain word by word by using construction dictionary ,he can finally got it and told me what exactly the question was.

And almost every week he practiced trade formula when he got home exhausting after work.

Last month we finally sent the app, and we got our destinations. Even if we can find some document , but i know we can't find it all cover 4 years continuously.

i wish i found you earlier. My husband was so hopelessly after i explained what you said about self-employed thing.

I also feel disappoint, so i got an idea to move out ca to another state where i and my husband prefer, because i know he can't got licensed ,maybe we can't have our business forever in ca.

aha, i found out other state is so generously about licensing contractor, why ca is so ……i can't find right word to describe my feelings.

As you said it's ca. I can do nothing about it.

Hello Licensed Guru,

Been reading some of your post. And the ones i've seen regarding my license which is c-33 Painting and Decorating have been a few years old now. I am trying to get a license this upcoming year for a new fresh start to a business. I am 23 years old My father has been Painting for 25+ and has been self-employed for 10+ years now. I want to get my license i have the experience but i have no documentation to say so. I have been working with him for over 4 years now. Is there any way i can still get licensed? I want to work and not have to worry about being screwed over for not having a license but don't want to work another 4 years for another company and start over.

Hello Dafman.... and welcome to CT.

At 23 you'd be labeled a "young journeyman." And would have to go thru the documentation process.

If you want to start a company right away... before you're 24, 25+, you could form a corporation, apply for a corporate contractors license, and have your dad be the RMO/Qualifier. After a couple three years you could apply to take the test to become the RMO/Qualifier on the license.

Thank you for the welcoming and for the quick respond.

The only problem with that is that he is not licensed and is ready to retire. So my best bet is llc. would that help or speed up the process? i just want to get the ball rolling and start planning projects for this upcoming year. I want to be fully in charge of the business and not having to rely on anyone.

Thank you, once again

If he has held the classification for at least one day within the last 5 yrs, he can be your RMO/Qualifier.

He would ultimately be responsible for any jobs done under the license.

The LLC requirements are very tough and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't qualify, plus going that route would not speed things up.

If you don't or can't use your dad as the qualifier, I suggest you wait until you are 24 if not 25 before applying as the qualifier on your own license.

Low Voltage Work Signed off by B General

Wonderful resource here, started reading this thread from way back in 2009 and just made it to the last page. Wanted to just get the threads quick feedback on my plan.

I am applying for a C-7 Low Voltage lic to do low voltage work for CCTV and other IP, Internet lines etc here in california.

I have been working as a sole proprietor, running my own business doing small business and residential electronics consulting. CCTV installs, AV setups, Wire Runs, under the guidance of my dad who is a B general contractor. I have been doing this part time since 2005 (9 years total, 4.5 years work total) and graduated in 2007 from UC school with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.

My question:

On the form I would like to include my sealed transcript to gain credit for the 2 years educational substitution. To do this, is there a separate form or do I have my sealed records included with my experience form. Typically they are considered sealed when sent directly to the recipient, in this case the CSLB. If so any help on where to get the information on how to submit?

In addition, I would like to claim 4 years 6 months experience at journeyman level or higher part time and have my dad sign off as a contractor that can verify with direct knowledge of my work. Question here is, as i see it, I should not list his information as employer with his lic information up top where it asks for my information and rather check self employed and have him only check and sign the bottom portion where he certifies he has direct knowledge of my work etc.. and list out the duties as Experience with residential and commercial installations of closed circuit television (CCTV), Ethernet, Cat5 Internet Lines, Low voltage audio etc.. Is my assumption correct here?

I am 29 and will be 30 at the time of taking the test. I started reporting my income from my business when the income level reached IRS reporting standards and thus I have 3-4 yrs (back to 2011) Would those returns stating my 1099 information for jobs performed count as experience proof?

Sorry for the long winded question. thanks in advance for your help!

C-8 Concrete License

Hello License Guru. New to CT and first time posting!

I tried to read as many of the previous threads in hopes of finding some answers to my situation with the latest CSLB acceptance for "self employment". After a lot of head scratching, i decided to go straight to the source.

I have worked cash going on 6 years now. The company i work for is licensed and would be able to vouch for my work experience as a foreman/supervisor. Would said company's certification of work experience be enough? What type of options am i looking at here?

Im trying to apply for a C-8 Concrete License. Feels like im stuck between a rock and a hard place and any insight you can provide would greatly help me in moving forward.

Thanks in advance!

Great resource and thanks for spending the time with to the point answers.

I'm in a partnership with my dad and brother who are no longer active in the trades in Cali and want to get my own license as it muddles things a bit now and I don't operate under the license name. We are B and C-10 and I have been on the license since 2005. Anything special or specific I need to do? Just want to make sure I have everything right so I don't waste my time and $ making mistakes. Also thinking about maybe incorporating. Thanks.

#1,719 ·
Assuming you are not the B or C10 qualifier on the partnership license, you have two options.

1) Apply to replace the qualifier on the current license and request a waiver of the exams. If you are a general partner, you would become the qualifying partner and the person you are replacing would have to become the general partner. Once that has been completed, you can apply for your own license and cancel the partnership license.

2) Apply for your own license and take a trade and law/bus exams. You would have to apply for one classification at a time.

I would like to get a concrete license. Would my own contracts be enough? I'm legally able to do my own concrete work now, but advertising it is a different story without that particular classification.

#1,723 ·
Chances are they probably won't ask you for documentation. Just submit the app with your c8 experience on the work experience form.

If they ask for documentation, you'll need to show them contracts that include concrete as part of the overall project.

Study Text

Would you guys recommend a textbook or a study guide specifically for the test like Peerless Study Guides or a book such as Renovation 4th edition or the book they recommend in the study guide (CSLB) Fundamentals of building construction. I am trying to learn and not just pass the test but of course passing is my number one priority.
I passed the California Law test but failed the General Building trade (66% of the required 71%). I mostly memorized questions which helped but still did really poorly in the core trades sections.

They dont tell you what your score is, so how did you get that info? They only tell you if you pass or fail. There's a legal reason for that. They don't want anyone to use the score to falsely claim they are somehow a better contractor because of thier score.

#1,727 ·
Nope. If you pass they don't give your score which is what happened with the Business and law. If you fail they give you your score and the proctor gives you a printout of your score broken down into 5 parts.....estimating, core, finish.....they even tell you how many questions were in each part and how many you got wrong. In my case I blew the core section. Even on CSLB's site they tell you how they give you your score when you fail so maybe it is a new thing.

#1,728 ·
Ah, I passed both the first time so that explains why I didn't know that. Actually it's good thing, it allows you to know where you need to improve. I have a contractors book and tapes I could give you. Can't remember how much of the trade is in those study books though. What city are you in?

#1,730 ·
Just updating you on my license. Sent in my final fee and asbestos test with the bond on 11-24-14. Application is still pending.

My technician said that they didn't receive my docs until 12-4 and as of today they are working on final docs from 11-19-14. Seems like they all took 2 weeks off for the holiday's. How nice.

Kind of ironic, if it were not for the contractor paying them fees, they would not be in business. You would think we would get a little better more efficient customer service.

Hi License Guru,

First of all, thanks for your help. I plan on applying for a c33 painter's license or a general contractor's license. I graduated on a business degree back in 2011, and have been working for my father's company for the past 2 years, but unfortunately I don't have much proof to show for it. My father has a C33 license.

I was hoping to know what would be the best route for me to pass the application portion if I were to get either the general B lic. or the c33 license? Should I check it off as self-employed with my dad proving that I had completed work projects or should I check it off that I worked under his company without having much proof such as paystubs/w2's/etc.?

What would be best route to take for the c33 painting license versus the general B license? Thanks again for your help.

Hi Phil,

I currently run a B-licensed corp using an RMO, in business since 2007. We specialize in flooring and finish carpentry, but use a generic business name- "My-last-name Construction, Inc.". I am going to get my license this year, but I'm not sure if I should get a B license first, then add the Cs, or do the Cs first. My question is if they would even issue a C license to a company with a very B sounding name. Would that be a problem?

#1,734 ·
A couple different scenarios here... do you want to add a C class to the existing license? Do you want to get a separate license in your name? Do you want to be the qualifier on the existing license, replacing the current RMO? What is your goal.

When applying for more than one classification, you have to be sure not to submit the same or overlapping experience time frames. If you're applying for the B class or to replace the current B qualifier, you'll need to provide documentation proving your B experience under the current license.

You could obtain a listed on license waiver (no exams) if you apply to replace the current B qualifier.

#1,735 ·
Thanks for the quick reply!

I'd like to replace the existing qualifier on the license so that my corp will continue doing business under the same license number. I am on the personnel list as the CEO/President and have been operating the business since inception in 2007. Would I be able to replace the current RMO without taking the exam? I have never taken the exam before. It would be nice to have a license in my name, but not if it means having to change the lic. number associated with my business.
