Do you have questions regarding California Licensing?

I worked at the CSLB as an application technician for many years. I have a great deal of experience and would be happy to help.

Post your question and get a straight answer.

Welcome to CT.

The only way you could qualify is if you have 4yrs exp in that trade, 2 yrs exp in the trade with a 4 yr college degree, use a company like The RMO Agency who can connect you with someone who will qualify a license for you, or ask one of your journeyman friends if they would like to be your qualifier.

Phil,

Me again! So its been 2 months now since I applied. My application was assigned an investigator over a week ago and I still have not heard anything on what they want me to do. I called the investigation department today and was told that my investigator is out of the office until the end of this week. Is there someone I can submit a complaint to? It is my understanding that it will be another 30-60 days after assigned to an investigator before my actual license is in my hands. This is at best 3 months that I will be restricted from bidding jobs and luckily has not put a financial burden on me. Should I continue to wait on CSLB or is there someone who i can contact to expedite the process? I've called the Investigation department once a week the past three weeks and she is now getting snappy with me and keeps telling me to wait, does anyone there understand that people need their license to make money!?!?

Understand? Maybe. Care? Probably not. David Fogt, I believe, is still the investigation dept head. You can write a letter to him stating that the constant delays on the part of the CSLB is causing a hardship. You may also want to contact your Representative or Congressman. The cslb ALWAYS caves to political pressure.

Hey license guru I have a question, is there anyway to get my original application info from cslb I want to incorporate and can't remember what arrest records I gave them when I was first licensed. I will need. To reapply and am in a catch 22 because if I tell them about something that wasn't on the original app they will say I lied on that app and if I forget something on the new app that wasn't on the original they will say I didn't come forward with info. So if I could get original app info this would solve the problem. Thanks in advance. My arrest record is DUI and some small mideamenors. When I was younger I was pretty wild.

Hi Phil,
I'd like to start by saying thank you for taking time out of your busy day to answer questions and get this information out there. It really helps!!
It seems as though making sure an application is filled out perfectly with the proper wording is essential. That said, I've been working on my application on and off for the past week and am nervous about sending it in and some how screwing up. I'm totally legit with 10+ years of verifiable work experience etc. I just have a lot riding on this and have to get it done right the first time. Would you mind taking a few minutes to look at my application and giving you opinion/thoughts? It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again Phil!!

Got a couple quick questions. I passed my law and General B exam last week. I got a letter after the exam saying I needed to submit my bond, license fee, ect. I sent everything in already. I was wondering if it's still taking about a month to get the license issued. Also, if my app was going to be picked for investigation, would they have already told me? I'm dreading seeing my application status change to being investigated and delaying my license. I have some jobs waiting for me and I'm eager to get started.

The letter asking for the bond, w/c, license fee is a standard letter. They dont make the letter specific to you. So if you've submitted everything then you'll be in the que for issuance. I just checked the cslb site and it says they are working on issuance from 4/23. So you probably have a month from the time you submitted all your final docs/fees/prints etc.

After working years as a sole proprietor, C-10, I incorporated my business and I became the RMO for the corporation (several years ago). Now, I am interested in starting an additional corporation and becoming the RMO for it as well. I plan to be an officer/owner/employee of both companies at the same time. It appears "my" license "belongs" to the corporation instead of to me as an individual. How can the new corporation use my name as RMO if the license/license number isn't actually mine? Thanks

"How can the new corporation use my name as RMO if the license/license number isn't actually mine?"

A license issued to a corp will always belong to the corp. If the corp is dissolved then the corp contractors license is null and void, never to return.

You, as an individual/qualifier/officer can be the RMO on up to 3 corporate contractors licenses.

"How can the new corp use my name?" I'm not sure what you mean. Your personal name? i.e. John Smith Corporation?

No problem. You can keep the current corp contractors license and apply for another corp contractors license if you need/want. Or you could apply for a sole owner license. But... only one corporation license per corporation. In other words, you can't have two contractors licenses under the same corporate number.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help on this!

On the application under the qualifiers section there's a blank to fill in that says:

QUALIFIER’S EXISTING / PREVIOUS CSLB LICENSE NUMBER(S)

In this space I can enter the current corporate license number? Is that correct? I was worried that number wouldn't work since it belongs to the corp now not me individually.

Hi Guru,

I read through the first ten or so pages on these forums, and then I did a quick search, but I couldn't find anything specifically addressing my concerns. I hope my question wasn't asked earlier, but I was hoping you could help.

I'm 24 with a BA in business from a 4yr and a BS in civil engineering from another 4yr. I was wondering if these degrees stack?

Also, I'm planning to use my father as my employer to verify my experience, but I wonder how that's going to look to the CSLB. I have very little paperwork authenticating my work with him because... well, that was the nature of our work. Would you recommend I use another general contractor, or would using him be fine?

I also wanted to know, can I use two separate employers by filling out two+ Certification of Work Experience sheets?

Also, how many years of experience should I write down to be safe? I mean, honestly, I've been digging trenches/framing/tiling/painting/etc. for the past 15 years, and supervising for the past 5... But proving that may be a little tough. What do you think my best bet is?

Thank you.

Hello RM87. Welcome to CT!!

Well.. to be blunt and straight to the point. If I were you I would NOT submit an application. Being 24 with so much education is a red flag. I can almost guaranty the cslb will classify you as a young journeyman and with no verifiable experience you are sure to be denied.

As I've stated in other posts.. once flagged - always flagged.

Degree's... I've actually never heard of anyone submitting 2 four year degrees. But since they are not construction related, I guessing you'd only get 2 yrs experience credit.

Certifier... anybody can be your certifier, if it's verifiable experience. (w-2's, tax returns, 1099's, etc)

Work exp pages... yes, you can submit as many experience pages as you like. As long as the time frames for that experience do not overlap.

Hope this helps.

Correct, 2yrs for the degree + 2 yrs of trade experience is all you'll need.

The cslb accepted flow is to go from journeyman to supervisor. At 24, I dont know if you'll be able to show that you went thru the journeyman level and 2 yrs of supervisory and your education.

The key will be to have the verifiable experience.

If you're flagged (and you may not) it will take several months to go thru the investigative process.
