To Whom it May Concern:

The purpose of this letter is to regrettably inform the CSLB that applicant ***x ***x on application 201***xx1 didn’t disclose his criminal record in its entirety. He didn’t fully understand the importance of disclosing every offence on his application, because the attached arrests were taken off his record and he doesn’t disclose them for employment.

My sincere apologies for the time waisted,

Nick H.

does this sound like a valid explanation?

Thanks again, I'm so close to the end of this thing ( I think ) I don't want to make it worse.

Hi Guru,
This is amazing that you manage this and are helping so many people with their process. I too have questions about California contractor licensing. I am a registered architect, I got my undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, and since then have worked in architecture and construction. I would like to apply for my B class General Contracting license. The CSLB website says I am eligible for up to 2 years credit for my architecture education, from an accredited college or university. UC Berkeley's undergraduate architecture program is unaccredited. When I spoke to someone at CSLB over the phone, they said I was to read their requirement as "an accredited college or a university," implying that the university does not need to be accredited. In my case, the university obviously is accredited but my program wasn't. I'm curious if you know how the CSLB assess the total experience granted for education? In my case I am a licensed architect, I would assume that even if my program doesn't qualify me for the whole two years, my license will help?
Thanks for the guidance.

Hello and welcome to CT.

I would think you'd get two years credit.

The remaining 24 months needed would have to be at the journeyman or supervisor level in the field that includes structural framing and at least two unrelated trades.
I am confident in providing over 24 months experience. Does CSLB differentiate between structural framing and rough carpentry? And would finish carpentry count as an unrelated trade to rough carpentry?

When completing the work experience certification of duties, should this just be a list of descriptions of classifications (rough carpentry; concrete; ornamental metal) or a more in-depth description of specific duties and tasks (framed structural walls; cast concrete counter; fabricated, finished and installed steel and wood bench and table systems; wired custom light fixtures)?

Thanks again.

They require that "framing" is included in the experience outline. Go with the more detailed outline. And be sure not to include administrative duties, such as generating/reviewing plans, pulling permits, contracts, meeting with clients, etc.

If the experience was obtained as an employee of a non-(contractors)licensed firm, the cslb will want a letter explaining how you obtained that B experience?

Guru, Thank you for the thousandth time.

I have my 2 disclosure forms filled out and signed and dated by my partner.

I have the letter, signed with the explanation

And, I have the 2 copies of my his and mine Livescan receipt.

Do you suggest I scan and email them all together to the address you sent?

Or, scan and email the disclosures and the letter, and mail the livescan receipts?

My account hasn't been flagged for review or anything and my test is on the 9th

Thank you,

Nick

Hey guys I just wanted to tell you a little bit about License Guru and what he offers. If any of you are on the fence about buying his study materials for licensure don't wait buy it now. I just took my Law/Business and Trade exam for General "B" yesterday and was able to pass my first time. Not only is License Gurus study material second to none but the free application review service he provides for CT members really is awesome. He and I exchanged 40-50? Emails over the past few months and his advice was always spot on. Also License Guru does offer License Bonds they're not the "cheapest" but considering everything he does for us the least we could do is to support him so that he can keep helping us. Thank you again very much License Guru

California C20 Lic. Expiry & Adding Officer

Good morning Phil, I am so happy I found your site!

I work for a National HVAC Contracting Corporation that has a California C-20 Corp License. We have branches throughout the US and are headquartered in FL. I recently took over managing the company’s state licenses and having an awful time trying to renew our CA license.

Our previous RMO retired and was removed from our CA Corp license in January, leaving only our RME (qualifier) remaining on the license. The RMO was never replaced.

I called the CSLB’s Renewals Unit inquiring about our renewal app in mid-July, (our license was to expire on Aug 31st). They said we must add an Officer to our license before we would receive a renewal app. Our new CEO completed the “APPLICATION TO ADD NEW PERSONNEL TO EXISTING CORPORATE OR LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY LICENSE” to be added as an Officer only.

The app was processed and accepted by the License Mod Unit on 8/26/19. He is now awaiting the Live Scan fingerprinting instruction packet to arrive. Once received, (and to speed up the application process), he’s opted to fly to CA to get the livescan prints done. Then we will have to wait for the prints to process…. and then wait for his application to be fully approved and have him added onto our license as an Officer. AND THEN…(sigh), I have to contact Renewals Unit and ask them to send me our renewal application, probably via snail mail, I send it back to them and then wait for them to process it.

Application is pending
• 08/06/2019 - APPLICATION RECEIVED
• 08/14/2019 - APPLICATION RETURNED FOR CORRECTION
• 08/15/2019 - PRINTED ACKNLDGMNT LTTR TO APPLCNT
• 08/26/2019 - PERSONNEL CHANGE FORM IS ACCEPTABLE

So with all of that said, we STILL HAVE NOT received the LiveScan Fingerprint Packet. When I called the License Mod unit to inquire, they said they didn’t know how long it would be to receive it. Do you know of any other dept I could call to inquire about the fingerprint packet? Do you have any advice for me as to how we can speed up any of this process? Would it be possible to get an extension on our current license considering our CEO’s application is in the final stages of processing? Our license is now expired and we have numerous jobs in the pipeline.

Whatever advice you can provide would be so greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!

Hello Heather, and welcome to CT.

The fingerprint packet won't be generated/mailed until the app is posted. I don't know why they didn't post it at the same time they stated the change form was acceptable. They're a very non-oiled machine and they don't do anything that is logical or expedient.

You could call the Criminal Background Unit, but I doubt they'd be any help because the app is still with the tech for the initial processing. Here's their number anyway. 916-255-1007

You could call or email the License Mod unit supervisor. Marilyn Norman to find out why it hasn't been posted yet. [email protected] 916-255-3955

When your renewal is ready to be provided, I can pick it up for you with a signed authorization letter (newly added officer) and email it to you. That would save time not having to go snail mail.

Email me when you get to that stage. [email protected]

Debating on LLC vs S-Corp. Am I understanding correctly, that bonding costs a lot more if you are LLC? Is doing the taxes more complicated for one vs the other?
Has anyone set theirs up through Contractors License School? If not, how did you go about setting up your LLC or S-Corp? Through an attorney?

Guru,
Today both of my FBI and CA livescans show as completed on the DOJ website.
I've completed everything else, fees, etc, my changes to my disclosure have been received and scanned.

My question is, does my application have to go back to CBU for review, which shows 8/22 for date they are processing.
Or will I go to license issuance, which shows 9/5 ?

Thanks again so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the bonding is more expensive... by $3000 to $5000.

A CPA could help you with the tax differences.

I can help you form a corp or LLC.

Hi Nick,

If the CBU has received the print reports then the issuance unit is notified and the license is issued.
