A house we recently Stained during mid summer with Cabots No VOC semi solid Stain now has black mold all over it. Everywhere. History. In 2000 the new cedar clapboard siding was stained with Cabots oil based-semi-transparent stain on both sides. After 7 years, siding was very dry with little stain visable. During a hot spell in July of 07, temps around 80-90, we restained it with 2 coats of the new Cabots semi solid with no VOC's using a Wagner Spayer and back brushing. During this winter (08-09) the house became covered every where with this black wet mold. Even where there is alot of sun.
Has anyone ever experienced this? And do you know of a solution. Cabot is of no help.

WOW that sucks. can you tell if the mold is growing on the semi-trans stain or if it is coming from under the material you applied (did you apply over a wet surface and did you wash the house properly?)?

It sounds like you need to talk to a Microbiologist. sometimes materials have mold and bacterial growth in them from the factory. This is something you need to get your paint rep involved in.

Mold on Stain

The mold is on the outside of the stain and you can actually wipe it off. The stain was put on the house when it was hot and dry. The siding just sucked it right in quickly. I explaned it to Cabot and their answer was that we had a lot of rain the past two years which made everything get moldy and musty. I've just never seen anything like this before. Don't make sense.

Are you positive that it's mold? Are there other homes in the area with this sort of a problem?
