So I didnt do so well on the C-6 CA exam. I got my study material through ACCL and they said to memorize the questions and answers to their final exams for the trade and OSHA and that I need to know the law and business. Well I had their trade and OSHA exams dialed( about 200+ questions each) and had about 20 flash cards that I made concerning specifics in law.
When I took the test this morning I swear I only reconized a handfull of question in each part. All the other question were regarding topics I had never seen at all in my study material. Is there any material out there some one can recomend? I asked the school before I took the test if there was any other material they could recomend and they said dont buy any extra material it will only confuse me??

I took my General B test several years ago and my C-33 last year. I bought a CD and book combination test material and that was all. They were only questions and answers to memorize. I spent several weeks studying them. The same thing happened to me when I saw the questions. Most of them were not the questions I memorized. I had already taken the law test for a C-63 so I did not worry about that. I don’t remember how I studied for that.

I think the class room way is a waste of time and mostly money.

What did you fail, law or trade? I did my original (C-8) 3 yrs ago, the law was the tough one compared to the trade. If you know your trade you should pass with flying colors. The law is something you need to know and should be what is the main focus of study. Study up on construction law, you don't need books, use the resource at your fingertips (internet) as well, most is common sense.

I failed both, law by 3%(public Works) and the trade by 9%(cabinet and millwork finishing), I dont BUILD cabs I install them and I dont do stairs, though it seems that alot of the question revolved around these 2. The problem like I said was that I didnt reconize the specifics of most of the Questions. If I had all the study material in front of me at the exam it would have been worthless, cause I know these specifics were not covered in my study material. I called the School and told them what happened and they said to fax them the results and they will call me. I cant imagine that they are going to send me adeqate material, but what choice do I have. Has any one ever had to buy additional material when already doing a program through a school?

In my opinion the ONLY way to pass a license test in Ca. is to go to one of the schools and get a hold of their practice tests. The books and the cd/tapes they give you are a complete waste of time. The info in them makes up only a small portion of what you'll run into on the tests. As far as I know, you can't get a practice exam anywhere except for an exam prep school. They guard those with their lives. If they get into the hands of the general public, the schools will go out of business instantly. When I was studying for my test, I went to a school and signed up for the home study course. All I did was show up to the school and take the practice exams over and over until I had them memorized. The tests cannot leave the building...they have guards and video cameras...literally. Those tests are their life blood.

I'm getting mixed signals on the 2 day class. How much can you retain in 2 days for 8hrs straight. How can you possibly remember even half of the material after even 3hrs?

So, you just walked in off the street knowing how many days prime contractors and sub contractors have to file a mechanincs lien, or all about the deadlines for filing stop notices and everything???

If the 2 day class includes taking and re-taking practice exams, you will remeber.

Reschedule now for a new exam date, I'm sure it takes time to get back in to the system. Study the law, know it inside and out, most is common sense but what's not common sense is dates, pre-lien/stop notices, etc. Those are the items that require studying for. Where do you think you missed on the trade exam? This is your trade, no one can help you with that. For what it's worth I have a C-8 and a B, the B was much easier than the specialty, more generic questions, but it covered complete building process. Consider switching to a B if you can.
